Issue 03  ·  October 2026
Hey neighbor,
Happy October! This newsletter, presented by Roots Realty Co. and Indy Street Sweep, has a new name. Everything else stays the same: we round up the best things to do around the city each month so you don't have to. We hope you like it!
And this month is a good one. Irvington spends a whole week on Halloween, Ed Sheeran plays Lucas Oil, and the city's oldest park is worth a slow walk. Here is the month in one place, plus a deli that has been open since 1905, a neighborhood to explore, and one Saturday morning where we could use your hands.
Not your thing? Totally fine. Unsubscribe here and we part as friends. Otherwise, let's jump into it!

Restaurant of the Month
Shapiro's Delicatessen
808 S Meridian St · South of Downtown · Open Daily
Four generations of Shapiros have run this place since 1905, and they bill it as America's oldest single-family deli. It is cafeteria style: grab a tray, point at what you want, and do not leave without the corned beef on rye. The bakery case is its own trip. Weekend breakfast runs 9 to noon.

Real Estate Pulse
Homes in central Indiana took a median 23 days to sell in August, up from 17 a year ago, so if you have been waiting for a little room to negotiate, see what is on the market or grab 30 minutes with our team.

Neighborhood Spotlight
Garfield Park
About two and a half miles southeast of Monument Circle, off Shelby Street.
The neighborhood is named for the park at its center, the oldest in the city. It became public land in the 1870s as Southern Park and took its current name after President Garfield was assassinated in 1881. Today it runs about 128 acres, with a glass conservatory, formal sunken gardens and fountains, limestone bridges over Pleasant Run, and an arts center in the old community building. George Kessler worked it into his 1908 park and boulevard plan, and the whole thing is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The streets around it are mostly early twentieth century homes on smaller lots, a quick drive from both downtown and Fountain Square. October is the month to go. The trees around the sunken gardens turn, and on a weekday morning you can have the paths nearly to yourself.

What we like
A historic park and conservatory you can walk to. Close to downtown and Fountain Square without being in the middle of either. Older homes with real character.

Be honest about
A lot of these houses are a hundred years old and many still need updating. Condition swings block to block, so get a thorough inspection and walk the street at a few different times of day before you commit.

Who sends this
We are Roots, a real estate team here in Indianapolis. We started the Street Sweep and our real estate events because we love this city and want to know the people in it. If you ever want to talk through a real estate decision, a neighborhood, or you are just curious what your place is worth these days, just reply to this email. We will tell you what we know, or point you to someone who knows it better.
That is October. If someone you know would get something out of this, forward it along. And if there is an event we should have on next month’s list, reply and tell us. We read every one.
