Neighborhood Spotlight Irvington Six miles east of downtown, along Washington Street. |
Founded in 1870 and named for Washington Irving, Irvington was laid out with curving streets and traffic circles at a time when the rest of Indianapolis was committing hard to the grid. That decision is why it still feels different. Big tree canopy, brick streets in places, and a housing stock of Victorians, Craftsman bungalows, and Tudors that mostly survived intact. Butler University sat here until 1928. The commercial strip along East Washington has filled back in over the last decade with coffee, bookshops, and a genuinely good bar or two. If you want the character of Fountain Square or Broad Ripple without the price tag that now comes attached, this is usually the answer. It is also the best Halloween neighborhood in the state, which is not nothing. | ||
