Real Growth Doesn’t Start with Learning, It Starts with Action

Happy Wednesday — I hope you had a great Father’s Day weekend! Thanks to my son, I got to experience my very first one as “Dad,” and I’m still taking it in. We slowed down, rested, and it gave me space to reflect.

Last week, we dropped a new episode with Trent Kiester, one of the top-producing agents on the Roots Realty Co team. Many of you know him as your agent—for good reason. Walking into 2024, I knew that, God willing, Ciera and I would be welcoming our first baby. One of my biggest goals was to be fully removed from all “work” obligations when he arrived.

That meant finding someone I could trust to step in and take over with excellence—not just someone who could hold things together, but someone who could grow the business and serve clients at a high level. At just the right time, Trent entered my life—and absolutely crushed it.

Last week, we hosted Trent on The Roots Podcast. Listening back to his episode, here were my biggest takeaways:

1. You Can’t Just Learn—You Have to Do

   Trent soaked up knowledge through forums, mentors, and BiggerPockets, but real growth happened when he actually took action. He saved up $10K barbacking and leapt into his first house hack—despite fear and limited experience.

2. House Hacking Is the Ultimate First Step
   His first property was a $120K fixer-upper he bought with a co-signer. He pivoted plans, rented out a room, and turned a scary leap into a smart wealth-building move—eventually selling for $175K after adding value.

3. Relationships Are the Real Wealth Builder
   Trent intentionally took a job at a golf bar to get in proximity to people doing what he wanted to do. That opened the door to mentorship, deals, and lasting impact. Get in the room, and your life will change.

4. Real Estate is a Long Game—Not a Quick Flip
   He didn’t chase short-term returns. He focused on building long-term equity, taking imperfect action, and improving the asset over time—what we preach to every new investor.

5. Purpose Fuels Habits
   Trent admitted he used to procrastinate—until he found something meaningful to pursue. When you have purpose, the hustle becomes natural. He built momentum through conviction and faith.
